5 Ways to Love your Liver this Summer

Our liver performs so many different functions from digestion and detoxification, to hormone regulation and the absorption of fat soluble vitamins. It is always working, and we come into contact with so many toxins everyday in modern society. Anything we can do to take some of the burden off, will help us look and feel better!

  1. Use clean skin care products. The skin is our largest organ; it can absorb poisonous chemicals so be sure to check the ingredients in your skin care and beauty products for things such as parabens and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole). Your skin also allows the body to detox through sweat, so avoid antiperspirant and petroleum containing body lotions.

  2. Eat bitter foods! Bitter foods such as dandelion greens, arugula, radishes, kale, broccoli and cruciferous veggies stimulate the liver and contain compounds that help you detoxify. They are rich in antioxidants and prebiotics to promote gut health too. Lemon juice has also shown protective effects on the liver. It can be added to dressings, fish, vegetables or in water.

  3. Skip on that second drink. Yes, summer in Vancouver is synonymous with patio drinks, but find a balance. Of course we all know that alcohol needs to be detoxified by the liver, so sub that second drink for kombucha, a flavoured soda water or a mocktail! And keep in mind, binge drinking is much harder on your liver than a single drink a few times a week.

  4. Careful on the caffeine. Although coffee is bitter and can be a good liver stimulant for some, it is processed by the same enzyme in the liver as estrogens. If this enzyme isn’t working at full capacity, you may be overburdening it. You can find out if you’re susceptible by getting 23&me or another genetic test (which I can interpret for you!)

  5. Get your glutathione! It is the body’s master anti-oxidant and is depleted by stress, drugs, chemicals, alcohol and even strenuous workouts. You can take glutathione orally, or through booster shots or IVs for better absorption. This along with our booster shots can give your liver the nutrients it needs to do its job.
